Free to Air 31st October
The Lost City of Z somewhat slipped under the radar on it's release, it's an extraordinairy biographical film, a film about sacrifice.
Our protagonist, Percy Fawcet is told from the outset that "This journey may well take your life". To some this is quite enough to put one off, to others, it's catnip. But the sacrifice, if met, is it driven by ego, avarice, fear or a sense of nobility? Each of us must face the truth eventually and no amount of exploring can hide it.
Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson are a well matched duo, Sienna Miller is (as always) superb. At the time all three actors were (maybe still are) criminally underrated which could explain how this film went relatively unnoticed. Come to think of it, the director, James Gray has other films that have also not received the recognition they deserved, most notably The Yards and We Own The Night.
As always, anything shot by Darius Khondji is a treat, most recently collaborating again with Pattinson for Micky 17 (great movie btw). The editing deserves special praise too, it's no easy feat to jump from place to place and time to time whilst keeping the fundamental questions of the work in place.
It's a classic heart of darkness adventure and a must watch.
The Lost City of Z is free to air on ABC iview.
