This week, a dip into the criterion collection, and not one you'd expect, it just so happened to be one of my favourite films growing up in the 80's. Police Story, directed, staring and co-written by the peerless Jackie Chan.

This version is dubbed, which is a shame as you miss the nuance from what turns out to be a stellar cast. Brigitte Lin was already a huge star and Maggie Cheung was on her way to becoming one. Both retiring early after star turns in Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express and In The Mood for Love respectively.

Police Story is fast, bold, cliche yes but since copied (ripped off) multiple times. Modern action films would do well to try and emulate the raw energy and earnest tone of Jackie Chans work.

As for Jackie Chans performance, it's one of the great physical acts caught on film, you have to admire his athleticism, bravery and invention.

Police Story is free to air on Kanopy.
